Things to do in Belgium: exhibitions and fashion in Brussels, a summer bar in Antwerp, food and art in Ghent, and more. See you there!
Opening: Mathieu Hubert and Johnny E. Valdez at FÖR
Thursday, 24 July, 18h00 Brussels
If you’ve been following us for a while now, you probably noticed how much we’re in love with gorgeous little concept store FÖR and especially its authentic Icelandic products. This week the Brussels shop invites you once again to an exhibition opening presenting the works of French-born image maker Mathieu Hubert and American photographer Johnny E. Valdez who offer two contrasting visions of contemporary Americana.
Fashion: Roos Vandekerckhove Pop-up Store
Until 15 October Brussels
Since June you can get your hands on the colourful, upbeat and optimistic pieces of Belgian fashion designer Roos Vandekerckhove in a bright orange Pop-up store on Rue Dansaert. Her collection inspired by French painter Douanier Rousseau already turned heads at this year’s Nationa(al) Pop-up Store. Definitely one to watch.
Photography: Extra Fort at Recyclart
Thursday, 24 July, 20h00 Brussels
With its “Extra Fort” evenings Recyclart’s Studio Marcel gives selected photographers a complete carte blanche for the period of one hour. The artists can either present their own work or something completely different. Next up: Beata Szparagowska and Brigitte Grignet.
Pop-up bar: Summer Josephine’s
Only open during the summer Antwerp
Temporary summer concepts seem to be all the rage this season. One of Belgium’s nicest is Antwerp’s Summer Josephine’s, run by the owners of cocktail bar Josephine’s in the South of Antwerp. The bar’s wooden structure combined with countless lovely lampshades makes for a magical atmosphere and cozy vintage sofas add a relaxed feel to it. The perfect hangout spot to sip on a delicious cocktail or have dinner on a warm, summery night.
Exhibition: Thomas Ruff at SMAK
Closes on 24 August Ghent
SMAK’s current exhibition “Lichten” showcases the work of German, New York-based photographer Thomas Ruff, reaching all the way back to the beginnings of his artistic career in the 70s. The expo reveals Ruff’s strong interest in the social, political and aesthetic aspects of image production and portraying the realities of photography. “I want to tell people to be careful if you look at photographs – don’t believe everything that you’re looking at because it’s either a pre-arranged reality or it’s reality, yes, but then afterwards the image is altered”, he recently told Another Mag.
Outdoor concert: Oh My Garden #20
Friday, 25 July, 18h00 Brussels
If you haven’t been to one of Oh My Garden’s magical outdoor concerts yet, now is the time to do so. This week unfortunately already sees the last event of the season with Belgian bands Hydrogen Sea, Down Town and Le Colisée taking the grassy stage. Don’t miss it!
