Exhibitions, a brand new art fair in Antwerp, sustainable Christmas markets and more: See you there!

Exhibition: Fabrics of Nature at Extra City

Until 9 January Antwerp

A cloud catcher inspired by the nets used in the Chilean desert and mountain ranges to distil water from the morning mist, collages made from recycled fabrics and found objects on the street, an installation of stones, both real and imitations, … “Fabrics of Nature” at Extra City in Antwerp deals with the multifaceted relationships between humans and nature, and especially the looming dystopian collapse humanity has to answer for. Seven artists (Aymeric Ebrard, Agnese Forlani & Jackson Shallcross-Platt, Feng Li, Gwendoline Robin, Luca Vanello, Leon Vranken and Luca Dal Vignale) present their works, not only in the stunning former Dominican chapel but also through the hallway and into the green monastery garden.

Art fair: Art Brussels goes Antwerp at Antwerp Expo

From 17 to 19 December Antwerp

Art Brussels, the Belgian capital’s long-standing, reputed art fair, leaves its home for the first time to descend upon Antwerp: For three days, art fans will gather in the Flemish city for the debut edition of “Art Antwerp“, a new mid-sized art fair of regional reach with 59 participating galleries, mainly from Belgium but also from Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and even Austria. A testament to Antwerp’s vibrant, burgeoning art scene, which will present itself from its best side this weekend, for example during the Antwerp Art Nocturne on Saturday, a special late-night gallery hopping.

Exhibition: HISK Laureates at Gosset site

Until 31 January Brussels

“Various Positions”, also the title of a Leonard Cohen album, is a group exhibition putting forward the artistic practices of the second-year candidate laureates at HISK, one of Belgium’s most reputed art schools. Last year, they inaugurated a satellite art space in a former factory in Brussels Molenbeek, the venue of the genre-crossing show. Through painterly, sculptural, photographic or cinematographic quests, the artists touch upon subjects from the linguistic situation in Belgium and the investigation of family histories to the country’s economic interests in its former colony, or poetic reflections on our global economy. With Dries Boutsen, Nelleke Cloosterman, Dani Ghercă,  Olivia Hernaïz, Karel Koplimets, Nokukhanya Langa, Gaëlle Leenhardt, Sandrine Morgante, Hadassa Ngamba, Elisa Pinto, and Paulius Šliaupa.
