Open-air art in Ostend, indie rock in Leuven, an alternative music festival in Brussels, and more. See you there!

Art festival: Crystal Ship

Starts Monday, 27 March Ostend

Crystal Ship 2019

It’s time to take a trip to the seaside, and not only because spring is showing its first signs. The Crystal Ship, which dropped its anchor in Ostend back in 2016, once again transforms the Belgian coastal town into a giant open-air art gallery. Until 8 April, when the new creations get officially inaugurated, you can watch the artists at work. Expect outdoor murals, sculptures, and installations by Joëlle Dubois, Elléna Lourens, Gviiie, and many others. You can either book a guided tour or discover the art trail on your own with this handy app or a map you can pick up for free at Tourism Ostend.

Night Out: London Calling at Rumba & Co

Thursday, 30 March, 23h00 Leuven

London Calling, one of Belgium’s biggest indie rock parties, descends on Leuven this week to take over Rumba & Co with its Arctic Monkeys-inspired I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor edition. Behind the turn tables: DJ Olly Ameen, a veritable indie rock encyclopedia offering a dancey mix of Joy Division, Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, The Smiths, and many many more. Hangover guaranteed.

Art night: Nightwatch 2023 at FOMU

Friday, 31 March, 20-3h00 Antwerp

Friday eve, 17 young artists between the ages of 16 and 26 will take over Antwerp’s photography museum for another edition of Nightwatch. Expect an evening full of performances, installations, poetry, music, and more. This year’s theme, R.I.P. EGO, unflinchingly explores the relationship we have with our ego, confronting ugly truths and beautiful lies. Don’t miss the after party at FOMU café! With works by Kapinga Joséphine Muela Kabeya, Sebastian Van Canneyt, and many others.

If you like what we do and want to support our free work,

In this exhibition at Damien & The Love Guru in Brussels, American, Berlin-based artist Jared Madere and Danish-born artist Mathias Toubro explore “the myths around romantic twosomeness, artistic community, and urban chic”. The large-scale sculptural installations envelop the entire gallery space, expanding across walls, floors and windows. It’s already closing on 7 April, so hurry up!

The second edition of the Ways Around festival is here, an alternative music bash taking place in three different cultural spaces all over Brussels: Le Lac, La Vallée, and Cirque Royal. Of course the spotlight is on concerts, but at the same time Ways Around attempts to create a community for alternative music lovers and makers. Highlights: Goodbye Fortune Tellers on Saturday at Le Lac and Madam, also at Le Lac, on Friday.
